Prenatal Classes: a new parent's view

Prenatal Classes: a new parent's view

Interview by: Jason Haug, Program and Project Management Officer

We sat down with Ben, a new dad, to talk about his experience taking an Ottawa Public Health prenatal class .

Ben, thanks for joining us today to talk about your experience taking a prenatal class.

Where did you take your prenatal class?

Ben: My wife and I took out prenatal class at the Library at Ben Franklin Place.

How was your experience there?

Ben: The experience was great. It was in a convenient location with free parking. We got to meet lots of other people in the same situation as us.

What was one of the most important things that you learned?

Ben: As a father, I think one of the most important things I learned was how I can support the mom during this time, before the baby is born. Things like how I can help her with pain management, what my role is... easy things like rubbing her shoulders, talking in ways that are respectful of the things she was going through, and learning how much we [dads or partners] can do- even though we aren't the ones carrying a baby. I think as a father, learning all the ways you can support your partner (or as a partner supporting a partner), is such an important part of this process.

Would you recommend these courses?

Ben: Absolutely! I think one of the things that is really key, is that you get a better understanding of what the process will actually be like-- what the process at the actual hospital will be like. I learned a lot about medication and the different options, which really can help people make an informed choice BEFORE you get to the day. AND THEN you get to meet all these soon-to-be parents who are going through the exact same thing as you. You get to build a little bit of that support network. We even chat with two of the parents we met now that the class is over, and we hope to put the babies in play group together.

Did the courses cost anything?

No- it was completely free.

As a new parent, do you think the course prepared you for what lied ahead?

I do . For sure! The thing I'd also recommend - that we did - is to check out the online prenatal class beforehand. We were able to prepare ourselves and then bring our questions we had to the classes to get some answers. It's great having access to a live person with experience in this area to bounce your questions off. I'd really recommend it to anyone about to have a baby.

Thanks so much for your time Ben, and congrats on your new baby boy.
