Prenatal classes and Pregnancy Circles

In-person prenatal classes 

Prenatal education gives parents-to-be answers to some of their questions and concerns.

The classes are free for parents-to-be who live in Ottawa. They are offered in English and French. A public health nurse teaches the classes.

Parents-to-be will:

  • Get up-to-date information.
  • Have the chance to meet with other expectant families.

How long are the classes?

There is 1 class per week for 3 weeks. Each class is 2 hours long. There are evening classes and some Saturday morning classes are available.

What are the topics?

Session 1: Birth Basics - Confidence and Comfort. 

Session 2: Breastfeeding Basics - Tips and Techniques. 

Session 3: Baby Basics - Preparing for Parenthood.

Where do the classes take place?

You can take the classes at 7 branches of the Ottawa Public Library:

  • Alta Vista
  • Beaverbrook
  • Cumberland
  • Nepean/Centrepointe
  • North Gloucester
  • Ruth E. Dickinson (Barrhaven)
  • St. Laurent

How do we register?

Registration: To register you will need a valid Ottawa Public Library card. Please visit the Ottawa Public Library website. If you have any trouble with the registration, contact the Library by phone at 613-580-2940 or infoservice@biblioottawalibrary.ca

If you do not have an Ottawa Public Library card you can get one by:

  • Going to any branch
  • Going to the Ottawa Public Library website to get a temporary card

Pregnancy Circles

Prenatal classes/program for expectant parents in need of extra support. Meet with other expectant parents and a public health nurse to learn about:

  • Staying healthy during pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Coping with labour and birth
  • Caring for your baby
  • Community resources

Young parents prenatal classes (up to 25 years of age)

  • Cost: Free
  • Language: English
  • Location: St-Mary's Outreach Centre and Bethany Hope Centre
  • Duration: 1 class per week for eight weeks 
  • Registration: To register for classes please call your preferred location.

Pregnancy Circle (Chinese)

  • Cost: Free
  • Language: Chinese
  • Location: Somerset West Community Health Centre
  • Duration: 1 class per week for six weeks on weekday evenings
  • Registration: Please contact the Somerset West Community Health Centre to register at 613-238-8210.
